Elections Fever

The UK elections are coming up - time to decide who to vote for! Lib Dems will get my vote (or maybe the greens)- its time for a change in British politics! Although I doubt they will win :(

Anyway - UK citizens who don't know how to vote - check this out...

(BTW, if you don't know which way to vote, vote Lib Dem please - trust me, they are the best).

Who Should You Vote For?

Who should I vote for?

Your expected outcome:

Liberal Democrat

Your actual outcome:

Labour -14
Conservative -47
Liberal Democrat 67
UK Independence Party -17
Green 52

You should vote: Liberal Democrat

The LibDems take a strong stand against tax cuts and a strong one in favour of public services: they would make long-term residential care for the elderly free across the UK, and scrap university tuition fees. They are in favour of a ban on smoking in public places, but would relax laws on cannabis. They propose to change vehicle taxation to be based on usage rather than ownership.

At the last general election in 2001, and in the local elections last year, I voted for them automatically. But the more I think about it, the more ambivilent I become. The big problem I have with the Lib Dems is that thier economic policies contain some terribley bitter pills - they're as free market and neo liberal as the othet two. And they don't seem to take much a a principle against PFI and othe private involvement in the state. There's currently a bit of an internal tussle between those who want it to be a good lefty thing and those who want to make it a more 'conservative' mirror.

In terms of sheer conscience factor, the greens might well be getting my vote. The pressing nature of many of thier policies means that, even if they're never going to be in power (though *could* get an MP in Brighton this time around) having some voice would be beneficial.

My advice is ultimately to vote against the Conservative party where there seems to be a danger of them winning in your constituency against the best challenger. And then otherwise, feel free to play around with the 'minor parties' :)

Good points there PL.

I think what I'd really like to see is a change. I don't think the current Labour government can be trusted and I sure as hell don't want the Conservatives to win! The Lib Dems would be a change and if they do well in the elections I think it would send out a loud and clear message about the need for a change in direction as far as British politics are concerned.

However, you are right about the economic policies :(.

Maybe I'll join you in voting for the Greens just to give some good people a louder voice - they are by far the most ethical party and the only group to give any mention to mental illness in their manifesto.

Oh heck, I want to see change so much. But not in the wierdly mutated sense of 'reform' that means slashing through our social structures and government care structures. As you say, the greens seem to offer the most posative and constructive vision. It's such a difficult compromise.

Ah politics! That's the thing which the church shouldn't dabble in, isn't it? Well, I took the test and came out as a Lib Dem - as expected. I'm fed up with the back biting and negative talk of the two main parties (Tory and Labour); seems a case of the pot calling the kettle black. The Lib Dems are a 'quiet' party who don't launch into the arena slagging off the other parties saying how bad things will be under them. They promote their own policies - which is what all the parties should do! Unfortunately I live in a staunchly Labour constituency, so I have been advised by our visiting Labour candidate to vote for them against the Torys, because my Lib Dem vote will be a wasted vote. Nonetheless I shall vote with my heart (a rare thing these days). Thanks for making me aware of the quiz, Ruth!

YAY! Vote Lib Dem!

Personally I have a suspicion than Lib Dem are far more popular than most people realise. Its just that too many people use tactical voting. Don't let Labour scare you into voting for them! Its not like current Labour are much better than the Tories anyway!

Ah, this is quite a nice change. I've been trying to convince my DUP voting family that the alliance party are the only party worth voting for in NI for the last week :)

(Ever hopeful for a Lib Dem government...one day people, one day!)
