McPoem

I feel dirty and ashamed. On my way home tonight I had a sudden craving for some McDonalds chicken and I caved in and ate chicken at the capitalist arches :(

Can I be forgiven? I even wrote a little poem when I was there about the couple sitting at the next table.

The Activists.

You sit, face to face
Oblivious to glancing eyes,
Your hands touch
Skin to skin
Black against white.
Your eyes meet in a lovers' gaze
A strong arm reaches out to touch
A muscular torso
Leaning forward
Unaware that with one kiss,
Simply being yourself
You are dashing centuries of taboo
And liberating all of us.

Quakers don't have a set creed so I guess so :)

I consider myself a non-theist because I don't feel able to affirm traditional theistic notions of God. Atheist - hmmm, well I am not sure - the jury is out on that one. But I'm definately a religious humanist if you want a label to stick on me :)

But in answer to your question - yes there are atheist Quakers.

I'd recommend a flick around the Universalist Friends website to find out more.

In particular you might find this article helpful: They too are Quakers, a survey of 199 non theist friends

I love your poem about the couple kissing and thereby "dashing centuries of taboo!"

I'm not sure anything can excuse entering McDonalds, not even a return to verse. Though my friend and old housemate dragged me into a Tescos the other day, and I'm still feeling unclean...

What's wrong with Tesco? :(

Aren't they the biggest supermarket retailer of fair trade produce in the UK? (In Northern Ireland, they even sell fair trade OJ - Mmmmm)

Or is that just an excuse I use for convenient supermarket shopping?!

*Missing Tescos*

PS. Where do you shop then?

It's a mixture of two things - with the same cause, that they're now the largest retailer of pretty much everything in this country, and ever growing.

Firstly, I have an instinctive dislike of larger corporations, their universal conforming stagnation, their dull uniformity. Wherever you go, you will see the same thing in the same way. That makes me very uncomfortable. This pretty brilliant short story, by the supremely talented Stanley Donwood, describes it best.

Secondly, from my perspective in horticulture they're pretty awful from the other side of things. Yes they're jumping on the fairtrade bandwagon*. But they push out every small retailer, impose terrible demands on small and independent producers, encourage the most unsustainable use of land in production. From my own perspective, I cannot forget this. Here's a fairly simplistic summery…though it's not limited to one company.

Being the embodiment of latent hypocrisy, I'm often to be found in Kwick Save - which at least has the appeal of being scrappy and cheapo. But when at university, and often here, I went to any shops and smaller retail chains that I could find nearby. The prices are a little higher, but it feels less irksome shopping there. Plus there are some independent shops around that are just as much of a pleasure to look around as a market.

*if you're the largest retailor in foodstuffs, it's likely you will be in most aspects within it. But how much of a percentage do they do? If the same as Co-op, then I might be impressed.
